The Sequoia boys and girls varsity cross country teams had an incredible 2023 season culminating in strong performances at the PAL Championships to qualify for CCS! Thousands of miles, courageous effort, personal records set and special memories made. We are proud of all you have accomplished!
The XC team kicked off the season along with 3,000 other athletes at the Lowell Invitational in Golden Gate Park. Top varsity runner, Rowan Henige, ran the 2nd fastest time in 15 years of Sequoia recorded history and a gutsy performances by Luke Popler who medaled with a top 10 finish in the Freshman Race.
Sequoia XC showed well in their first PAL event in Half Moon Bay before competing with 70 schools in the Ram Invitational at Westmoor HS. Senior Rowan Henige broke the Sequoia course record for the 4th race in a row. Juniors Cameron Reynolds, Zach Vidana, Owen Leung, and Luke Shafer also clocked outstanding performances in the varsity race. Finishing 2nd of 24 teams, the Sequoia Girls (Emily Chan, Mira Goodwin, Sarina Sanghvi, Gabi Csuti, and Natalia Sweet) were on fire. Congratulations to the sophomore and JV boys - Cooper Gaffney, Brennan Sherman, Cole Myers, Victor Delvat, and Arran Henderson - who all set course PRs. Luke Popler and Rinji Low medaled in the freshman boys race, and Luke set a Sequoia 9th grader course record.
Highlights from the second PAL meet at the Crystal Springs course include: Rowan Henige was 3rd place in the varsity race, Sabine O’Hara finished 6th place in the open girls race, and Zach Vidana and Cameron Vijeh placed 8th and 9th in the boys open race respectively.
The team also competed in the Terry Ward Invitational earning the girls open team a 3rd place overall finish featuring Emily Chan in 2nd, followed by Miran Goodwin in 6th place. Dylan Williams won the open race for boys, and Sabine O’Hara was 9th place in the Frosh/Soph girls’ race. Rowan Henige was 6th place in the boys’ varsity race with a lifetime PR for the 5k and the fastest time on the Terry Ward course by a Sequoia athlete.
